Creating Cards: Melanie’s Idea
Used With: Elementary students
Switch and Touchscreen
Teach Mode/ABC Keyboard
Details:
My classroom makes seasonal cards (Halloween, Thanksgiving, etc.) for their parents using CubeWriter’s Teach Mode. We created a Custom profile for words we want to write on cards. We add a couple of words on each key to make phrases. Then we type them into the Teach List. The keys read like this:
1) “Trick or Treat”
2) “Smell my feet”
3) “Give me”
4) “Something good”
5) “To eat!”
6) “Love,”
7) “Madison”
In Teach mode it flashes and reads the words/phrases that are on the keys. The students write them by responding with a switch or touchscreen. After printing the sayings, we cut them out and paste them on hand-made cards.
Duplicating CubeWriter’s Keyboard: Dana’s Idea
Used With: Students with Cerebral Palsy
Alternative keyboard
Write Mode/FOU Layout
Details:
When using an alternative keyboard with overlays, we ran into a problem. The problem was that the traditional keyboard overlay was too long for a student with cerebral palsy to reach all the keys. So, we created an overlay that was a duplicate of the CubeWriter keyboard for less reaching AND it matched the keyboard on the screen. This helps the student visually as well as physically.
Word Find: Annette’s Idea
Used With: Elementary students
Mouse or regular keyboard
Details:
We have an after-school program at our school. One of my students, who uses CubeWriter in my classroom, attends this program. I arranged for CubeWriter to be available during the after school program so he can practice writing and become more familiar with the program. Now several of the after-school students are using CubeWriter for “Games” that involve writing, but are motivating and exciting for the children. One of the games is called “Word Find”. The children are given a list of age appropriate words with the purpose of locating them in the word lists. The students think this is a game, yet they are being exposed to learning in a fun way.
Writing a Book: Rebecca’s Idea
Used With: Early Childhood Education
Mouse and Touchscreen
Details:
My classroom is writing a book - in their own words. I have the children tell me what they want to say as their part of the story. I write/print their words on a sheet of paper, and they copy/type it into the word document using CubeWriter’s ABC keyboard. They even add the punctuation marks! The children have lots of FUN with this and can’t wait for their turn.
Self-Checking Spelling Words: Jacquie’s Idea
Used With: Elementary students - Resource Room
Mouse
Write Mode/ABC Layout
Details:
I work with a student who struggles with spelling and writing. We practice spelling words in the resource room. I have her first verbally spell out the word, then she goes into CubeWriter’s Write Mode to self-check her spelling. If she has spelled the word right, she writes it into her document and prints out her results.
Matching Game: Mary’s Idea
Used With: Early Education student - with cerebral palsy
Alternative Keyboard
Teach Mode/ABC Layout
Details:
I have a student who is just learning his letters and can not write them with a pencil. I enter single letters into the Teach List and run CubeWriter in Teach Mode. The letters flash, read, and repeat until the student keypunches that letter, writing it into the document. I have also laminated individual letters (looks like letter keys from CubeWriter’s keyboard) and display it at the same time CubeWriter is teaching that particular letter. The student LOVES this and thinks it is a game! I plan on taking it from letters to words, then sentences. What a fun way to learn!
INPUT OPTIONS:
There are four input options.
Our on-screen keyboard keys are also touchscreen friendly.
WORD LISTS:

All word lists can be "personalized" by adding information such as names, addresses, phone numbers, etc.
